On Saturday, office bearers of the Kerala Pradesh School Teachers Association (KPSTA) met with Chief Minister-designate V D Satheesan to express their desire for the Congress party to retain the education portfolio in the new government. KPSTA, which is associated with the Congress, argued that previous issues arose when the education ministry was allocated to ally parties.
During the previous UDF government led by former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) held the education portfolio, resulting in challenges for KPSTA. T U Sadath, the state associate general secretary of KPSTA, underscored the teachers' association's preference for Congress to handle the education ministry.
There was additional pressure from the BJP, advocating against giving the education post to IUML, thereby reinforcing the need for Congress to manage the ministry. Portfolio allocation discussions are expected to conclude after further talks among UDF allies in Thiruvananthapuram, forming a coalition that will include 21 ministers.
