The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has raised concerns that tribal communities in Great Nicobar Island are unaware of the implications of a proposed mega infrastructure project. The project aims to build a transshipment port, international airport, and townships, affecting over 160 square kilometers of land.
NCST member Asha Lakra, after visiting the islands, emphasized that while the communities are not opposed to development, they require more information about the project's impact. Tribes like the Nicobarese and the Shompens, traditionally inhabiting the forest areas, demand better transport, education, and health facilities.
There are also allegations of legal violations pertaining to the project's development, with issues regarding the Forest Rights Act and the conduct of public consultations. The project remains a contentious topic, with tribal representatives stressing the importance of transparency and adherence to constitutional mandates.
