The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has expressed concern over a deadly stampede during the Rath Yatra festival in Puri, which claimed three lives and injured approximately 50 others. In response to the incident, which has triggered statewide outrage, the OHRC has called on the district administration and police to implement effective measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.

The rights body has sent notices to the Puri District Collector and Superintendent of Police, seeking an explanation for the security lapses that led to the tragedy despite robust security being in place. Additionally, the OHRC has mandated that the injured receive adequate medical care.

In the wake of the incident, the Opposition parties have criticized the state government's handling of the festival. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has publicly apologized to the devotees and announced a compensation package for the victims' families. Two police officers have been suspended, and the Puri Collector and SP have been transferred as an inquiry is underway to investigate the cause of the disaster.
