In a tragic turn of events, eight kanwariyas lost their lives in separate road accidents as the Kanwar Yatra nears its conclusion in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The annual pilgrimage, dedicated to Lord Shiva, saw an unfortunate series of mishaps, prompting increased security and urgent advisories.
The Delhi Traffic Police announced road closures due to the influx of pilgrims, while police in Barabanki and other districts are investigating attacks on kanwariyas by alleged inebriates. Local authorities are also apprehending individuals for drug supply and theft amidst the yatra, trying to maintain order along the routes.
The yatra's challenges have sparked criticism of lax security and the presence of unidentified anti-social elements. Samajwadi Party MLA Iqbal Mehmood expressed concerns about hooligans compromising the sanctity of the yatra, urging government intervention. The Kanwar Yatra is set to conclude with devotees returning after offering Ganga water at Shiva temples.
