Legacy of a Theatre Luminary: The Final Curtain Call for Ratan Thiyam

Renowned theatre personality and Padma Shri awardee Ratan Thiyam passed away at a hospital early on Wednesday, at the age of 77, following a prolonged illness, according to officials.

Thiyam, recognized for his unique integration of traditional Manipuri art forms with contemporary theatrical innovations, was admitted to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, where he succumbed around 1:30 am.

As the founder of the Imphal-based Chorus Repertory Theatre, his contributions were multifaceted. The Manipur government has expressed deep sorrow, acknowledging Thiyam as a cultural icon whose work reflected the soul of Manipur, its narratives, and its beauty. Condolences have poured in from the artistic community and beyond, highlighting his enduring legacy.
