Controversial Film 'Udaipur Files' Cleared for Release Amid Legal Hurdles

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has cleared the path for the public release of the controversial film 'Udaipur Files: Kanhaiya Lal Tailor Murder,' dismissing all petitions challenging its certification. This comes after weeks of legal scuffles and massive public scrutiny due to the film's alleged communal overtones.

On August 6, 2025, the Ministry issued a final ruling that affirmed the Central Board of Film Certification's (CBFC) process was proper and lacked procedural errors when it certified the film. The filmmakers adhered to the 55 cuts mandated by the CBFC and made additional voluntary edits. There wasn't any new evidence or compelling reason to reverse the certification.

The Delhi High Court, informed by the Additional Solicitor General on August 1, that the government had withdrawn its previous recommendation for six additional cuts, leading to an immediate disposal of petitions demanding a stay on the film's release. The film depicts the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor in Udaipur, Rajasthan.
