In an unfortunate turn of events, beloved singer Zubeen Garg died in a swimming accident in Singapore, where he was visiting for personal relaxation and the North East India Festival (NEIF). Shyamkanu Mahanta, the chief organizer, stressed Garg's trip was not solely for the festival.

Mahanta clarified that celebrations for the NEIF had not yet begun, countering misleading social media claims. Garg was in Singapore to meet people and interact with the Assamese community, not to perform. His demise has cast a shadow over the festival, which aims to link Northeast India's cultural and economic potential with Southeast Asia.

Although some questioned the nature of the festival, Mahanta emphasized its cultural and economic mission, highlighting previous successful editions in Thailand and Vietnam. The NEIF works towards strengthening ties between India's northeastern states and ASEAN countries, aligning with India's Act East policy.
