Padma Vibhushan honoree Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, a distinguished figure in Hindustani classical music, died at the age of 89 early Thursday after battling a prolonged illness. His daughter confirmed that Mishra took his last breath at approximately 4 am in Mirzapur, where he had been residing with his youngest daughter's family.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences, praising Mishra's invaluable contributions to India's cultural tapestry. Modi highlighted that Mishra had endorsed his 2014 candidature for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed sorrow, calling Mishra's death an irreplaceable loss to Indian classical music.

Born in Azamgarh in 1936, Mishra was a celebrated exponent of Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, and other classical styles. Trained by his father and other masters, he was a leading figure of the Banaras gharana. His last rites are scheduled for 5 pm in Varanasi, where he will be remembered for his lifelong dedication to classical music.
