Padma Vibhushan recipient and celebrated vocalist, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, passed away at the age of 89 in Mirzapur. His cremation took place with full state honors at Manikarnika Ghat, where his grandson performed the final rites.

The mortal remains of Pandit Mishra were brought to his ancestral home in Varanasi. A large crowd, including dignitaries like UP Minister Dr. Dayashankar Mishra and the Varanasi mayor, gathered to pay their respects. Tributes from the music community, including Malini Awasthi and Dr. Soma Ghosh, highlighted his immense contribution to Indian classical music.

Born in Azamgarh district, Pandit Mishra was trained by his father before receiving formal training in Banaras. He excelled in the Banaras Gharana, particularly in Khayal and Purab Ang Thumri, earning both national and international accolades. Recognition of his work came in many forms, including prestigious awards like Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow, emphasizing Mishra's lifelong dedication to Indian art and culture. He acknowledged Mishra's efforts in bringing classical music to a global audience and remembered Mishra as his proposer from the Varanasi Lok Sabha constituency. Mishra is survived by his four daughters and a son.

The world mourns the loss of a maestro renowned for his melodious and soulful performances, a true exemplar of Purab Ang's Thumri style.
