Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, the distinguished vocalist and Padma Vibhushan awardee, breathed his last on Thursday morning in Mirzapur, following a prolonged illness. At 89, Mishra's passing marks the end of an era in Hindustani classical music, where he was celebrated for his mastery over styles including Khayal, Thumri, and Bhajan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed their condolences, highlighting Mishra's profound influence on Indian arts. Modi remembered with gratitude the years of affection and blessings received from the legendary singer, who had once endorsed him for the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat.
Born in Azamgarh in 1936, Mishra's legacy is defined by his dedication to the Indian classical music genre, particularly the Banaras gharana and Purab Ang tradition of Thumri. Trained by his father and other maestros, his voice was a beacon of purity and devotion. He leaves behind his son, Ramkumar Mishra, and daughters. His funeral rites will be held in Varanasi.
