Tragic Traditions: Fatalities and Injuries at Devaragattu Banni Festival

In a tragic turn of events at the Devaragattu Banni festival in Kurnool district, two participants lost their lives and 90 others were injured during a traditional stick fight. The incident occurred despite extensive safety measures and awareness campaigns, officials reported.

The festival, which draws thousands of villagers annually, takes place on Vijay Dashami and involves participants adhering to rigorous vows of fasting, celibacy, and dietary discipline. The symbolic stick fight is part of the festival's tradition, aiming to capture an idol, while minor wounds are treated with turmeric.

While incidents of injury are common, this year saw a significant police presence with nearly 1,000 officers and the use of 10 drones to maintain order. Authorities are challenged with balancing the preservation of this cultural event with ensuring safety.
