On Thursday, the esports industry hailed India's newly announced online gaming rules which officially recognize registered esports as a legitimate sport. The directives aim to thwart proxy platforms from masquerading as esports. Though key advancements are evident, industry voices highlight persisting issues like vagueness in financial frameworks applicable to esports teams and players.

The revised regulations follow the Centre's notification on Wednesday of the Implementation and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, which introduces a 'regulation-light' framework. This avoids the need for mandatory registration for many social online games and is set to take effect from May 1, 2026, setting up an 'online gaming authority' as the digital-first regulator.

Notwithstanding formal recognitions, Akshat Rathee, Co-founder of NODWIN Gaming, and Animesh Agarwal, Co-founder of S8UL, voiced concerns about the sector's financial clarity. The newly laid plan also ensures compliance obligations for banks, demanding financial transactions only with certified gaming entities, thus promising increased trust within the Indian gaming ecosystem.
