In response to a devastating explosion at a fireworks manufacturing unit, the Chandanappally Valiya Pally Church in Pathanamthitta has decided to cancel fireworks for its upcoming annual feast. This tragedy, which took 15 lives, has prompted church leaders to advocate for reduced fireworks use at celebrations.

Catholicos Baselios Marthoma Mathews III of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church urged the community to exercise caution with fireworks. Following this appeal, the renowned church, known for its affiliation with the Orthodox Church and as a pilgrimage site dedicated to St. George, has redirected its fireworks budget towards charitable causes.

The main feast is planned for May 7 and 8, drawing thousands of devotees. Meanwhile, Thrissur Pooram, which will see scaled-down festivities, is scheduled for Sunday.
