The Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C Joseph Vijay, has mandated a revamp of Amma Canteens to enhance infrastructure and food quality to offer tastier meals. The decision came after concerns were raised about the taste and quality of food, leading to a review meeting with senior officials.
Amma Canteens, named after the former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, also known as 'Amma,' are an initiative from the 2011-16 AIADMK regime aimed at providing affordable meals to the public. The canteens operate at highly subsidized rates for the benefit of the people.
The Chief Minister has emphasized improving amenities, securing better cooking equipment, and elevating food standards. Currently, 620 Amma Canteens function across Tamil Nadu, with 383 under the Greater Chennai Corporation and 237 managed by other local bodies. The government remains committed to maintaining quality service that benefits the community.
