Mumbai Zoo Inches Closer to Homecoming of Asiatic Lions

Mumbai's Byculla Zoo has received in-principle approval from Gujarat's Sakkarbaug Zoological Park to exchange giraffes, rhinos, or capuchin monkeys for four Asiatic lions. The proposal, requiring further approvals, follows a formal request made in February for the lions, under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

Mumbai's Byculla Zoo is on the verge of welcoming four Asiatic lions, following an in-principle agreement with Gujarat's Sakkarbaug Zoological Park. In a strategic move, Mumbai plans to exchange giraffes, rhinos, or capuchin monkeys for the big cats, pending necessary regulatory approvals.

A communication from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) revealed that the Junagadh-based facility agreed to provide two male and two female Asiatic lions to the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Botanical Udyan and Zoo. This transaction is contingent upon approval from relevant authorities, including the Central Zoo Authority.

The initiative, which aligns with the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, ensues Mayor Ritu Tawde's February appeal to Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel for the lions as a goodwill gesture. The exchange will adhere to all guidelines regarding veterinary care, quarantine, and transportation.
