Famed Indian singer Anup Jalota has been granted honorary membership of the Uttar Pradesh Devbhumi Sanghatan (UPDES) by an organization established by Indian expatriates in South Africa. The group is committed to fostering Indian culture in the region.
Jalota conducted concerts in Durban and Johannesburg over the weekend and commended South African Indians for preserving their heritage across generations. Reflecting on obstacles he faced, Jalota noted how Indian artists had been barred by the government from performing in South Africa during the apartheid era, despite desires to connect with fans there.
The singer acknowledged that after Nelson Mandela's release and subsequent political changes, he was among the first wave of Indian performers to tour South Africa, witnessing the community's enduring love for Indian music and values. He expressed hope that increased Hindi language education would further strengthen cultural bonds.
Jalota also expressed his gratitude towards Ashish Sharma, president of UPDES, who facilitated his honorary membership. Sharma emphasized the importance of cultural preservation not just for expatriates but also for the broader Indian community in South Africa.
