Red Balloon Aerospace, based in Hyderabad, successfully launched India's inaugural indigenous super-pressure balloon (SPB) on Wednesday. This balloon carried payloads from seven national and international partners.
Known as VISTA, the balloon ascended from Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada to an altitude of approximately 25 km. Co-founder CVS Kiran highlighted the mission's goal of showcasing SPB technology capabilities in India for the first time, focusing on the design and materials of the balloon.
While the SPB is set to remain airborne for 24 hours, Red Balloon Aerospace envisions future versions capable of staying aloft for months. Co-founder Sireesh Pallikonda emphasized the benefits of SPBs over traditional satellites, noting their reduced costs and proximity to Earth, which enhances data resolution and transmission speeds.
Red Balloon is planning 12 to 16 SPB launches this financial year, aiming to provide both rideshare and dedicated services. These balloons, reaching 20 to 40 km in altitude, can offer telecommunications coverage, industrial monitoring, and support for disaster-response operations.
