Uproar in Himalayan Apple Orchards: NITI Aayog's Import Duty Controversy

Farmers argue that removing these tariffs could devastate local agricultural markets and plan to protest if changes proceed.

In a significant development stirring the agricultural sector, apple farmers in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu & Kashmir have raised strong objections to NITI Aayog's recommendation to the central government. The think tank has advised reducing or abolishing import duties on US agricultural imports, including apples and nuts, prompting fears among local growers of an existential threat to their livelihoods.
Harish Chauhan, leading the charge as the convener of the Himachal Pradesh Sanyukt Kisan Manch, expressed grave concerns. Speaking to ANI, Chauhan described the recommendation as akin to a death warrant for apple growers in these states. According to Chauhan, the removal of tariffs on apples, almonds, and walnuts would significantly impact the high-value market segments that Indian farmers rely on.
The timing of this controversy coincides with an impending deadline set by US President Donald Trump regarding tariff adjustments between India and the US. With diplomatic exchanges underway, Chauhan has urged the Indian government to uphold the interests of local farmers in ongoing trade talks, suggesting that any concessions should focus on industrial goods rather than crucial agricultural commodities.
