In an impressive display of growth and ambition, India has cemented its status as a formidable global leader in the defence sector over the last 11 years. Significant strides in indigenizing its defence production capabilities have pushed the country's total defence production value to Rs 1,27,434 crore in the 2023-24 financial year—a 174 percent increase since 2014-15.
Central to this achievement are indigenous platforms such as the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, Arjun tank, Akash missile system, and ALH Dhruv helicopter, which have collectively driven the nation's defence advancements. This explosive growth has been fueled by targeted policies and a resolute push for Atmanirbharta, or self-reliance. The year 2024-25 saw India achieve a defence export tally of Rs 23,622 crore, with the private sector contributing significantly.
The government's indigenisation strategy is further bolstered by the Positive Indigenisation Lists, which curb imports and promote local manufacturing across 5,500 items, including advanced systems. Two Defence Industrial Corridors have attracted substantial investments, laying the groundwork for India's ambitious goal to become a global hub for defence manufacturing. Complementary initiatives such as iDEX have fostered innovation, creating a robust industry built on indigenous talent and resources.
