In a concerted effort to bolster disaster readiness, the Jammu and Kashmir Disaster Management Department executed a comprehensive mock drill simulating a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) scenario in Pahalgam.
The strategic exercise, carried out in collaboration with the Anantnag District Management Authority and involving SDRF, NDRF, and the Indian Army, aimed at refining safety protocols ahead of the Amarnath Yatra commencing July 3. Last year, over 4.5 lakh pilgrims visited the Amarnath cave shrine, underscoring the necessity for robust disaster mitigation strategies.
Deputy Secretary Snober Jameel emphasized the region's vulnerability to glacial hazards due to the presence of numerous glacial lakes. Through coordinated drills, the department seeks to enhance the readiness of response forces such as SDRF and NDRF in managing extreme weather events, including the potentially devastating cloudbursts.
