Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta paid homage to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his death anniversary, highlighting an enduring tradition. Describing Mookerjee as a 'Mahanayak', she commended Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government for realizing Mookerjee's vision by revoking Article 370.
In her address, Gupta stated, 'Floral tributes are an annual ritual, but the true tribute is Article 370's abrogation by PM Modi's government. 'Ek vidhan, ek samvidhan aur ek pradhan'—this is our nation's creed.' She emphasized unity, saying, 'Our country cannot be fragmented; one constitution governs all. Mookerjee's 'nation first' principle guides us.'
Joining the tribute, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other BJP leaders paid their respects to Mookerjee. Addressing attendees, Pradhan remarked, 'Prime Minister Modi realized Mookerjee's sacrifice, abrogating Article 370 after 66 years. This act honors Prasad ji's legacy.'
Dr. Mookerjee, who founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh—BJP's ideological precursor—served as Minister for Industry and Supply under PM Nehru, but resigned over the Delhi pact issue in 1950. He established Jana Sangh in 1951, becoming its first president.
Mookerjee's visit to Kashmir in 1953 resulted in his arrest, leading to his death in detention on June 23, 1953.
