In a significant judicial intervention, the Nainital High Court has halted the anticipated Panchayat elections in Uttarakhand. The elections, announced by the State Election Commission to proceed in two phases across 12 districts, faced suspension following legal challenges over reservation policies in various areas.
Previously, the High Court's Chief Justice directed the state government to respond to these challenges, which include objections to reservation decisions. A detailed reply was submitted before the court today, prompting the decision to stay the election process.
The State Election Commissioner, Sushil Kumar, had earlier outlined the election schedule, with nominations set from June 25 to 28 and voting on July 10 and 15. However, with the High Court's intervention, the Model Code of Conduct, for now, remains on hold.
