The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo-motu cognisance of media reports regarding the alleged gang rape of a 20-year-old student at Gopalpur sea beach in Ganjam District, Odisha. The reported incident, which took place on June 15, has prompted the NHRC to act.

Reports suggest that the victim and a male friend were celebrating a festival when they were approached by about ten individuals. Allegedly, the men overpowered her companion and sexually assaulted her. In light of the grave nature of this case, the NHRC has issued notices to the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police in Odisha, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.

The NHRC has specifically asked for information on the investigation's status, the survivor's medical condition, and any state-provided rehabilitation, compensation, or counseling. Updates as of June 16, 2025, reveal that the survivor underwent a medical examination at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, and police have detained seven suspects.

The NHRC stresses the crucial need for justice and holds law enforcement accountable. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has condemned the crime, promising severe legal action against the offenders. Official statements assure the public that no perpetrator will escape justice. (ANI)
