The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI), a state-owned enterprise, is in the final stages of issuing a tender to produce and supply 724,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, in a progressive step towards sustainable fertilizer production.

This initiative, under the Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition scheme, seeks to decrease reliance on fossil fuels in ammonia production. Ammonia, a key ingredient in fertilizers like urea, is responsible for significant greenhouse gas emissions when produced using traditional methods.

SECI aims to reduce dependency on imported natural gas and minimize exposure to volatile global gas prices while cutting the trade deficit. Through this initiative, India hopes to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions associated with hydrogen production.
