The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Emergency in India as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas,' taking aim at the Congress party's historical actions. BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal described the observance as a significant defeat for Congress, highlighting its contentious role during that period.

Khandelwal recalled a poignant song sung by detainees during the Emergency from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, under then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The song, "Hathkadiyon ki jhankar sune, jantantra ki lalkaar suno," became a symbol of resistance against governmental oppression, encapsulating the period's challenges.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah, at a commemorative event, acknowledged Sumita Arya, a survivor of the Emergency era, illustrating the struggles of detainees like her. Arya recounted her family's ordeal, describing the experience as the murder of democracy by Indira Gandhi, leading to a resulting impact on democracy in India.
