The European Union and Ukraine have reached a preliminary agreement concerning the future of agricultural exports to the EU, officials announced on Monday. European trade commissioner Maros Sefcovic revealed the development, which follows previous measures put in place after Russia's invasion of Ukraine disrupted traditional supply routes.

The initial measures, introduced in June 2022, had temporarily lifted duties and quotas on Ukrainian farm products to mitigate the impacts of Russia threatening Ukrainian shipping lanes through the Black Sea. However, a recent surge of cheaper Ukrainian grain, poultry, and sugar led to widespread protests in neighboring EU countries, prompting a return to pre-war trade standards.

Despite these challenges, the EU remains Ukraine's largest trading partner, while Ukraine ranks as the third-largest supplier of agri-food products to the bloc. This new agreement sets the stage for future cooperation while addressing current trade tensions.
