In a significant development, Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court has greenlit the closure report of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) concerning the disappearance of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) student Najeeb Ahmed, who vanished in October 2016. Originally lodged as an FIR by the Delhi Police, the case was subsequently handed over to the CBI on May 16, 2017.
Presiding over the matter, Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Jyoti Maheshwari voiced that the CBI retains the authority to reevaluate the case should new evidence arise. The magistrate's decision came despite a protest petition filed by Ahmed's mother, Fatima Nafees, who has consistently sought justice for her missing son.
During the investigation, statements from pivotal individuals including Najeeb's mother, his friend from Jamia Millia Islamia, and the JNU hostel warden were recorded. Allegations of an altercation with fellow students had surfaced as a potential lead at the time of his disappearance. However, the CBI ultimately opted to file a closure report in 2018, marking an unresolved chapter in this high-profile case.
