The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has named Trinamool Congress (TMC) MLA Paresh Pal and two city councillors among 18 individuals accused in its latest chargesheet concerning the murder of BJP leader Avijit Sarkar. The chargesheet, a supplement to previous filings, was submitted to Sealdah's Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate on June 30.
The case, initially registered by the state police on May 2, 2021, and later taken over by the CBI, centers on the violent death of Sarkar post-West Bengal Assembly elections. The Kolkata Police's Homicide Squad had earlier pressed charges against 15 accused on August 6, 2021. The CBI filed their own expanded report on September 30, 2021, involving 20 accused, revisiting the state's charges.
BJP's Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar welcomed the CBI's action as a step towards justice. Majumdar harshly criticized TMC, labeling them 'hooligans' and drawing stark comparisons to the Taliban-era, citing the brutal murder of Sarkar and his pet dog in front of his residence and mother as unprecedented acts of violence.
