In a significant development, a special court in Malda, West Bengal, has convicted a retired government school teacher for raping a nine-year-old girl. This case represents the first conviction in the post-poll violence incidents investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

The Calcutta High Court, on August 19, 2021, had directed the CBI to probe cases of murder and crimes against women during the post-election violence, specifically focusing on rape or attempted rape. Among these, a case was filed concerning the rape of a minor girl by Rafikul Islam, also known as Bhelu, which led to his conviction.

The heinous crime occurred on June 4, 2021, when Islam lured the child, playing in a mango orchard, with money and committed the assault. A minor witness confirmed the incident in court, leading to the judge's verdict finding Islam guilty under the POCSO Act and IPC sections.

Amitava Maitra served as the Special Public Prosecutor for the CBI during the trial, which concluded with Islam's conviction, marking a milestone in the probe into West Bengal's post-poll violence cases. The sentencing will be announced shortly.
