Controversy Erupts Over Voter List Revision in Bihar Ahead of Elections

BJP Spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla criticizes Congress for questioning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists in Bihar, calling it vital for electoral integrity. Opposition parties, however, label the move as a constitutional threat. The Election Commission maintains that the SIR is aimed at identifying ineligible voters before the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections.

In a sharp rebuke, BJP National Spokesperson Shahzad Poonawalla on Thursday took aim at Congress for challenging the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, describing the measure as crucial for maintaining the integrity of the democratic process. Poonawalla highlighted Congress's selective criticism, questioning their silence in states where they emerged victorious through the very same electoral mechanisms.

On the other end of the political spectrum, leaders from the INDIA bloc, comprising 11 opposition parties, assembled in the national capital to formally oppose the SIR initiative being executed in Bihar. Led by Congress's Abhishek Manu Singhvi, the delegation aired their grievances during a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, arguing that the timing of the revision—mere months before assembly elections—undermines the constitutional foundation.

The Election Commission of India (ECI), meanwhile, has defended the SIR as an essential step to validate voter eligibility in preparation for the impending Bihar elections. Despite assurances from the ECI, opposition voices, including the Rashtriya Janata Dal, caution that the revision could potentially disenfranchise legitimate voters. The Bihar legislative elections are anticipated later this year, though the commission has yet to confirm the official date.
