The Union Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has firmly refuted accusations of diluting environmental protections, labeling such claims as unfounded and based on a "gross misunderstanding of facts." This rebuttal comes in response to allegations by Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who cited a civil society letter alleging subversion of the Forest Rights Act.
Ramesh had unveiled a letter signed by over 150 civil society organizations on social media, challenging amendments to the Forest (Conservation) Act and other policies. In its detailed response, the ministry maintained its dedication to safeguarding forests, stressing that its actions are not only protective of India's green cover but also of the communities dependent on it.
The ministry criticized the claims as misleading and suggested that statements by Minister Bhupender Yadav had been misinterpreted. It clarified that any perceived forest degradation was linked to selective reporting and that current strategies involve active community participation in forest management. The ministry also highlighted ongoing collaborations with tribal communities to bolster conservation efforts.
