Floor leaders from the INDIA bloc are set to hold a crucial meeting at 10 AM on Thursday in the office of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) at the Rajya Sabha. The gathering aims to strategize their approach for the upcoming session in the House. Following this meeting, INDIA bloc Members of Parliament (MPs) are expected to stage a protest at 10:30 AM outside Makar Dwar in Parliament.
The protest is anticipated to be a response to the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the opposition claims could lead to large-scale voter deletions and disenfranchisement. Meanwhile, the Rajya Sabha is preparing to tackle significant legislative and procedural business, including a resolution regarding the extension of President's Rule in Manipur and deliberation over the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025.
In an essential development, Union Home Minister Amit Shah will propose a resolution seeking the continuance of the proclamation concerning Manipur for an additional six months starting from August 13, 2025. Concurrently, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will present the Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill, 2025, in the Upper House for further consideration and passage, having previously been approved by the Lok Sabha.
The bill aims to define the responsibilities and rights of carriers concerning the carriage of goods by sea. Subsequently, Minister of State L Murugan will propose the election of ten Rajya Sabha members to the Committee on the Welfare of Other Backward Classes (OBCs). Furthermore, several Union Ministers are expected to update on the status of recommendations from various Parliamentary Committees in sectors like Posts and Telecommunications.
Dinesh Sharma and S Selvaganabathy are slated to present several reports from the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Finance, specifically addressing action taken by the government on the 2024-25 Demands for Grants. As both Houses prepare for substantial legislative activity, the session that has seen heated debates and adjournments is expected to continue until August 21.
