In a concerted effort to address the mounting plastic pollution problem, the Kerala government is poised to launch a groundbreaking deposit-return scheme for liquor bottles sold through the Beverages Corporation (Bevco). This initiative is geared towards promoting recycling and curbing environmental pollution and is set to pilot in Thiruvananthapuram and Kannur this September. Under the scheme, a Rs 20 deposit will be charged for each liquor bottle, including both plastic and glass, at the time of purchase, with customers eligible for a refund upon returning the QR code-enabled bottles to the same outlet.
Excise Minister MB Rajesh highlighted the significance of the initiative, noting that over 70 crore liquor bottles are sold annually through Bevco, with 56 crore comprised of plastic. This substantial figure underscores plastic's role as a major contributor to the state's non-biodegradable waste. 'The system not only aims to reduce littering by incentivizing bottle returns but also marks a critical advancement in Kerala's waste management strategy,' Minister Rajesh remarked, referencing a similar successful scheme already in place in Tamil Nadu.
The scheme is being rolled out in partnership with the Clean Kerala Company Ltd (CKCL), which will manage logistics, processing, and the recycling of returned bottles. Furthermore, the minister announced the opening of Bevco's inaugural super premium outlet in Thrissur on August 5, spanning 4,000 square feet and offering high-end liquor brands priced above Rs 900. Rajesh added that four additional outlets are on the horizon, emphasizing the state's commitment to reducing plastic use by ensuring liquor priced above Rs 800 is sold exclusively in glass bottles.
