In an effort to revolutionize senior citizen policy-making in India, former Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi has introduced a 'SWAT' framework—Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats—to address the complexities of ageing. Speaking at a National Conference on Ageing in India, Bedi advocated for monthly ministerial meetings akin to those led by the Prime Minister to streamline approaches for senior welfare.

Bedi emphasized recognizing families and community networks as strengths, while addressing weaknesses like poor infrastructure and lack of ageing preparedness. She stressed the need for health-focused policies promoting yoga and nutrition. Opportunities exist in tapping into the elderly's wisdom and skills, connecting them with schools and startups to foster a 'silver economy.' Bedi also warned against threats of loneliness and financial insecurity.

V. Srinivas, Secretary of the Department of Pension and Pensioners' Welfare, highlighted advancements in digital empowerment for the elderly, citing the submission of digital life certificates by over 1.62 crore pensioners. Manoj Yadav, Former Haryana DGP, advocated for financial literacy among the elderly to protect against fraud, arguing they can contribute significantly to society while mentoring disadvantaged youth. The session was chaired by former G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant and featured inputs from academics and policymakers.
