OPEC+ Edges Towards Production Boost Amid Geopolitical Pressures
OPEC+ is set to increase oil production by 548,000 barrels per day from September amid concerns over Russian supply disruptions and U.S. pressure on India. This decision, expected during a virtual meeting, marks the reversal of major output cuts and aims to stabilize oil markets and appease international stakeholders.

In a significant development, OPEC+ has reached a preliminary agreement to boost oil production by 548,000 barrels per day starting in September. This move comes as global concerns intensify over potential supply disruptions linked to Russia, alongside mounting U.S. pressure on India to cease Russian oil imports, aligning with Washington's broader strategy to engage Moscow in peace negotiations over Ukraine.
The OPEC+ coalition, comprising the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and 10 other non-OPEC oil-producing nations, including key players Russia and Kazakhstan, is poised to fully reverse its largest tranche of output cuts. Historically, these cuts were implemented to support oil prices. However, the current geopolitical landscape and a desire to regain market share have influenced the group's decision to expand production, a decision further underscored by U.S. President Donald Trump's previous calls for heightened output.
Since April, eight OPEC+ members have incrementally increased production, with significant hikes each month culminating in a projected 548,000-barrel-per-day increase for August. Despite these efforts, oil prices remain high, with Brent crude nearing $70 per barrel. If the September increase proceeds, it effectively unwinds the previous production cut of 2.2 million barrels per day, although additional voluntary cuts across member nations remain in effect until 2026.
