Former Jharkhand Chief Minister and stalwart Bharatiya Janata Party leader Champai Soren was overcome with emotion as he paid tribute to Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder and veteran tribal leader, Shibu Soren, at his residence on Tuesday. The revered JMM patriarch passed away at 81 on Sunday at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi, following a prolonged illness.
The final rites of the former Chief Minister were scheduled to be held at his native village, Nemra, in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district. Politicians across party lines have paid homage to Soren, applauding his enduring contribution to Jharkhand's political landscape and his steadfast commitment to tribal rights.
Shibu Soren's political career, spanning over four decades, began in humble circumstances. Born into a modest Santhal Adivasi farming family in Nemra village, his father's murder by local zamindars ignited Soren's lifelong fight for justice and tribal rights. He co-founded the JMM in 1972, championing the cause for a separate tribal state, and served as Jharkhand's Chief Minister thrice. Notably, his efforts were instrumental in the creation of Jharkhand state in 2000, cementing his status as a tribal icon.
Despite facing legal challenges, including a conviction later overturned, Shibu Soren remained a formidable political figure, known for his relentless dedication to tribal empowerment. His passing marks the transition of the JMM leadership to his son, Hemant Soren, continuing the legacy of advocacy for the downtrodden and oppressed communities.
