A disturbing trend appears to be emerging in Odisha, as a young college student allegedly set herself ablaze in her home in Kendrapara district, according to police sources. The incident was reportedly triggered by blackmail from her boyfriend.
This tragedy is the third case of a woman dying from self-immolation in Odisha since July 12, shining a spotlight on the pressing issue of harassment and mental health. The latest incident occurred in the morning in Kathiapada village, under the jurisdiction of Pattamundai (Rural) police station.
The deceased's father claimed that his daughter had sought police intervention against her boyfriend's harassment six months ago, but no substantial action had been taken. This negligence, he implied, contributed to her drastic decision, further urging the district authorities to thoroughly investigate the case.
