Sikkim's lone Lok Sabha member, Dr Indra Hang Subba, has made a plea to the Union Minister of State for Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, Ram Nath Thakur. Subba aims to expand coverage under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) to include crop damages caused by wild animals.
During a recent meeting in New Delhi, Subba submitted a compelling representation, focusing on the plight of farmers in hilly and forest-proximate regions. These farmers frequently face losses due to raids by wild animals such as boars, monkeys, and deer.
Subba pointed out that while the PMFBY currently covers various natural calamities, it overlooks the impact of wild animal incursions. He argued that addressing this would not only aid affected farmers but also contribute to the Prime Minister's mission of doubling farmers' incomes.
