A massive deodar tree, which had posed a danger for days, fell onto the Environment Directorate building in Shimla, causing substantial structural damage. Fortunately, no injuries occurred, informed Dr. Suresh Kumar Atri, a senior scientist at the State Science and Technology and Environment Directorate. "The tree had been leaning for several days, especially after successive rains. We had informed the Municipal Corporation," Dr. Atri stated to ANI on Thursday.
Dr. Atri stressed that global warming is worsening climate conditions, causing intense rainfall across the region. Himachal Pradesh continues to suffer monsoon fury, significantly affecting essential services and leading to fatalities. According to the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC), as of Wednesday, 452 roads, 861 power transformers, and 244 water supply schemes were still disrupted due to heavy rains.
PWD Minister Vikramaditya Singh highlighted government efforts to tackle climate impacts, emphasizing pre-disaster measures. "We aim to install early warning systems statewide," Singh mentioned, noting that Rs 600 crore in tenders will be initiated soon. Himachal Pradesh Minister Jagat Singh Negi reported massive infrastructural damage and financial losses, surpassing Rs 1600-1700 crores due to relentless rains.
