The Indian Defence Ministry has launched plans to replace its obsolete fleet of Chetak and Cheetah helicopters with 200 state-of-the-art Reconnaissance and Surveillance Helicopters (RSH). Set to enhance both the Indian Army and Air Force, the proposed change demands 120 units for the Army and 80 for the Air Force.

The issued Request for Information (RFI) outlines the ministry's intent to finalize technical prerequisites, select an appropriate procurement strategy, and identify potential suppliers. The plan encourages Indian firms to collaborate with original equipment manufacturers. These modern helicopters, operating round-the-clock, will undertake varied roles, such as reconnaissance and surveillance, troop transport for special missions, and crucial civil assistance alongside military tasks.

Previously, in March, the Air Force announced acquisitions of additional defence systems, including utility helicopters. As per the Standing Committee on Defence, future purchases for 2025-26 include radars, Light Combat Aircraft, and multirole helicopters, crucial for operational readiness along strategic borders. The Defence Ministry underscores its commitment to domestic defence production through the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, emphasizing self-reliance and job creation within the aerospace sector.
