India Achieves Renewable Milestone: Carbon Intensity Reduced by 7% Ahead of Schedule

India has made significant strides in reducing its carbon emissions, achieving a 7% reduction in carbon intensity up to FY24, Parliament was informed. The pivotal role of renewable energy and efficient technologies has been highlighted as instrumental in this progress.
Minister of State for Power, Shripad Naik, emphasized India's dedication to climate action while balancing energy security and affordability. Despite coal's current dominance, the government aims for net-zero emissions by 2070, underscoring efforts to increase renewable energy's share in the grid.
Remarkably, India met its goal of 50% non-fossil fuel capacity five years ahead of its 2030 target. Initiatives like permitting full foreign direct investment and implementing obligations for renewable purchase and consumption have driven this success.
