Himachal Pradesh has suffered extensive financial losses amounting to almost Rs 20,000 crore due to rain-induced calamities over the past three years, according to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu. Addressing the press in Shimla, the Chief Minister cited the latest bout of heavy rainfall as having caused significant destruction across the state.
In the aftermath of last night's downpour, tragically, three lives were lost in Mandi district's Sundernagar Nihari area, and two individuals have gone missing in Kinnaur. Additionally, 13 families in Kangra have been relocated to safer accommodations. The retreating monsoon wreaks havoc on the state, resulting in substantial losses to drinking water systems, irrigation projects, and power infrastructure since its onset on June 20.
The Chief Minister attributed this increasing devastation to climate change and rising temperatures, noting that the impacts this year are more severe compared to 2023. Sukhu assured that his ministers and senior officials are actively monitoring the situation to facilitate timely relief and rescue operations.
Citing faulty planning, Sukhu criticized constructions built close to rivers and streams, exemplified by the heavily damaged Dharampur bus stand. Addressing the financial challenges, the CM expressed hope for a Rs 1,500 crore relief package as promised by the Prime Minister, while also announcing state compensation for affected families.
