Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Tuesday dismissed concerns over the potential damage of ethanol-blended petrol E20 to automobile engines at the KPMG's annual energy and resources conclave, ENRich 2025. Puri emphasized that blending petrol with 20 percent ethanol, derived from sugarcane or foodgrains, is environmentally safe and the fears are unwarranted.

Puri addressed the confusion among motorists and carmakers, acknowledging it originated from initial concerns about older vehicles' compatibility with E20. However, he reassured that while older vehicles might need minor replacements like rubber parts and gaskets, the process is simple and ensures safety.

The minister highlighted India's increased ethanol blending from 1.4 percent in 2014 to 20 percent, underscoring the national initiative to reduce emissions and boost farmers' incomes. Despite criticism citing reduced efficiency, Puri pointed to improved acceleration as a benefit, affirming E20's potential in the face of rising global energy demand.
