Kerala's Transplant Triumph: Boost in Organ Pledges After Heart Surgeries
Kerala eclipses a previous decline in organ donations following successful heart transplants at Lisie Hospital, Kochi. The state records 650 new organ pledges in a week, a notable rise attributed to overcoming public mistrust. The trend is now increasing hope for thousands waiting for life-saving transplants.

In the wake of two heart transplant successes at Lisie Hospital, Kochi, Kerala has recorded a significant rise in organ pledge registrations, with 650 new pledges in just a week. This brings the total to 7,866, propelled largely by a surge of interest among individuals aged 30-45.
Dr. Jose Chacko Periyappuram led the transplants, which involved the heart of Issac George, a brain-dead patient, being airlifted from Thiruvananthapuram to Kochi for a 28-year-old recipient, and the heart of 18-year-old Biljith being transplanted into a 13-year-old. The operations inspired a renewed public trust in organ donation.
The increase in pledges comes as Dr. Noble Gracious, Executive Director of KSOTTO, highlights the state's move past a period of mistrust fueled by the Malayalam film 'Joseph'. Despite lagging behind larger states like Maharashtra in numbers, Kerala's organ donation drive now shows a hopeful momentum.
