Supreme Court to Hear Plea Against Non-Hindu Inauguration of Dasara Mahotsav at Mysuru Temple

The Supreme Court has agreed to review a petition challenging the Karnataka High Court's decision that allowed a non-Hindu, Banu Mushtaq, to inaugurate the Dasara Mahotsav at Chamundeshwari Temple. The petitioner argues that this is against traditional Hindu practices, which require specific religious rites.

The Supreme Court has listed for hearing a petition challenging Karnataka High Court's ruling that upheld the state government's decision to have Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq, a non-Hindu, inaugurate the Dasara Mahotsav at Mysuru's Chamundeshwari Temple.

Filed in opposition to the High Court's verdict dismissing the plea against Mushtaq's invitation, the Supreme Court petition contends that the tradition-bound inauguration involves Hindu rituals that cannot be carried out by a non-Hindu.

The appeal cites the disruption of long-standing traditions, calling the High Court's decision a misinterpretation of Hindu ceremonial practices. The event is scheduled for September 22, with the Supreme Court likely to hear the matter on Friday.
