The Supreme Court has agreed to review a petition challenging the Karnataka High Court's decision that allowed a non-Hindu, Banu Mushtaq, to inaugurate the Dasara Mahotsav at Chamundeshwari Temple. The Supreme Court has listed for hearing a petition challenging Karnataka High Court's ruling that upheld the state government's decision to have Booker Prize winner Banu Mushtaq, a non-Hindu, inaugurate the Dasara Mahotsav at Mysuru's Chamundeshwari Temple.
Filed in opposition to the High Court's verdict dismissing the plea against Mushtaq's invitation, the Supreme Court petition contends that the tradition-bound inauguration involves Hindu rituals that cannot be carried out by a non-Hindu.
The appeal cites the disruption of long-standing traditions, calling the High Court's decision a misinterpretation of Hindu ceremonial practices. The event is scheduled for September 22, with the Supreme Court likely to hear the matter on Friday.
