India's stride towards self-reliance in artificial intelligence took a significant leap as BharatGen, the nation's first government-backed sovereign AI initiative, secured a substantial Rs 900 crore fund from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for Atmanirbhar Bharat, as highlighted in his Independence Day address.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced this financial boost, making BharatGen the largest beneficiary under IndiaAI Mission 2025. Overseen by IIT Bombay's Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan and Executive Vice President Rishi Bal, BharatGen is forging India's AI landscape into a potent, homegrown ecosystem.

BharatGen's latest development, Param-1, a bilingual language model, lays the groundwork for inclusive AI access in 22 scheduled Indian languages. With its far-reaching consortium of top-tier Indian institutes, BharatGen aims to embody India's diverse linguistic capabilities in the global AI domain, reflecting the government's unified vision under PM Modi.
