Delhi Government Faces Contempt Notice Over Soft Loan Delays for Judicial Officers

The Supreme Court has issued contempt notices to Delhi officials for not implementing soft loan facilities for judicial officers as mandated by a 2024 judgment. Despite repeated directives, the Delhi government hasn't facilitated loans for vehicle purchases, which critics argue, shows defiance of the court's orders.

The Supreme Court has initiated contempt proceedings against the Delhi government following claims of neglecting court orders. The Judicial Service Association of Delhi's petition accuses the government of failing to enact a soft loan scheme for judicial officers, as directed by a January 2024 judgment.

Senior advocate Meenakshi Arora argued the case, highlighting the government's non-compliance with the directives intended to provide judicial officers loans up to Rs 10 lakh for vehicle purchases. The petition earned support from advocate K Parameshwar, appointed as amicus curiae, who emphasized the non-implementation represents wilful defiance.

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, along with Justices K Vinod Chandran and Atul S Chandurkar, has called on the Delhi Chief Secretary and Finance Secretary to respond. The case, slated for October 6, 2025, underscores growing tension between judiciary and government over the unfulfilled recommendations of the Second National Judicial Pay Commission.
