Industry giants such as Reliance Industries and Adani Power are showing keen interest in Bharat small modular reactors (BSMRs). They have earmarked 16 prospective sites across six Indian states for potential development.

The interest comes in response to a Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) call for setting up these reactors, aimed at revolutionizing power generation and utilization for major industries. Other corporations in the race include Jindal Steel and Power, Tata Power, Hindalco Industries, and JSW Energy.

While NPCIL will retain control and ownership of these projects, successful bidders will finance the operations in full. This initiative seeks to enhance energy supply for sectors with heavy power demands, like steel and aluminium, by repurposing decommissioned thermal power plants.
