China's Strategic Island Expansion: Boosting Maritime Influence

China announced its plans to further develop the more than 11,000 islands it claims, marking a significant push to solidify maritime power and affirm territorial claims. The long-term initiative is part of a strategy to secure natural resources and enhance governance over these disputed areas.

Over recent years, China has engaged in extensive land reclamation in the South China Sea, establishing artificial islands, airstrips, and military bases. Strategic control of these islands is crucial for accessing deep-ocean resources, according to a report by the People's Daily, the official newspaper of the Communist Party.

Despite tensions, including recent military exercises by the Philippines, United States, and partners, China continues to assert its maritime presence. The country has invested billions into its naval capabilities, as part of its goal to emerge as a 'great maritime power'.
