Border Allies: Petro and Rodriguez Unite for Change
Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Venezuelan counterpart Delcy Rodriguez have agreed on intelligence-sharing and efforts to combat crime along their shared border during a meeting. They aim to improve trade, explore energy cooperation, and address challenges like drug trafficking and illegal activities, despite pressure from the U.S. President.
In a recent meeting, Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Venezuelan leader Delcy Rodriguez reached an agreement on intelligence-sharing to counter crime along their contentious border. The leaders also discussed enhancing trade and ensuring electricity provision to western Venezuela, a region plagued by frequent blackouts.
This meeting was a significant diplomatic engagement for both countries, with Rodriguez stating that cooperation on energy, including electrical and gas interconnections, is a tangible step forward. Nearly 3 million Venezuelans have migrated to Colombia recently due to economic hardships, illustrating the complex socio-economic ties between these nations.
The discussions come amidst pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump, who demands changes from both nations in tackling drug trafficking and opening the Venezuelan economy to foreign investment. Despite these challenges, Petro and Rodriguez continue to foster bilateral ties, emphasizing that the border should benefit citizens rather than criminal entities.
